The Ayurvedic & Megnetotherapy Research Institute (AMRI) is an autonomous body under registered Non Govt. Voluntary organization, established on 2nd October 1981, AMRI, is Recognised by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) Govt. Of India New Delhi. Affiliated by NIEPMD- Chennai. The institute has been recognised by Ministry of social justice & empowerment, Govt. Of India. Its main objective is to undertake manpower development conduct research and develop service models in programmes. NIEPMD, Chennai, offers two academic year teachers training course leading to Diploma in Special Education (Mental Retardation and Hi) NIEPMD, Chennai will organize examinations and issue Diploma Certificate to the qualified trainees from these centres. Each centre has an intake capacity of 25-30 seats. The course prepares the students to work as special educator in special school in special class situations in regular school and to work in integrated set up in regular schools. AMRI has been emerged as Multi – Dimensional service provided for the well fair a person with disabilities through its following departments / Units.
Outpatient Department : For Assessment & Counselling of Mentally Retarded. Hearing Impaired and Speech Impaired children, by professional viz..., Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Paediatrician, Speech Therapist, Audiologist, Occupational Therapist and special Educator
Therapeutic Interventions : Through Early Intervention, Multisensory therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Hydrotherapy, Yoga-Dance-Music-Drill therapy and Panch Karma Therapy by Ayurveda.
Special Schooling : For educational uplittment of challenged children up to secondary and senior secondary level under National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Ministry of HRD, Govt. Of India.
Vocational Training : For rehabilitation the skill oriented children at Weaving, Tailoring, Stitching & Embroidery, Art & Crafts and Bakery & Confectionary.
Teachers Training Programmes : Under approval of Rehabilitation Council of India Ministry of SJ&E, Govt. Of India. NIEPMD, Chennai and NIMH, Secunderabad have affiliated our Institute for conducting D.Ed, SE (MR)/(HI) and B.Ed Courses in Special Education.
Centre for Rehabilitation Medicine (CRM) : A therapeutic clininc, for the treatment and rehabilitation of children & adults having orthopaedic, neurological, arthritic disorders, Patients suffering from stroke, spinal injury, cerebral palsy etc. Will also have treatment for rehabilitation by the Panch Karma Therapy of Ayurveda.
AIM: The aim of this course is to prepare the trainee teacher to screen, assess, educate and person with mental retardation in individual or group settings.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
On completion of the course the trainee teacher is expected to perform following functions and educational assessment of persons with mental retardation and hearing impairment. Apply principles from psychology to develop, implement and evaluate educational programmes for persons with mental retardation at preschool, primary, secondary and prevocational levels in home-based, school, hostel or any other setting offering special educational programmes.
Analyse and manage under supervision from appropriate expert, behaviour problems in the classroom setting.
Initiate, under supervision from appropriate experts, prescribed therapy programme in Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy inform the family regarding available services and promote integration of the person with mental retardation in the family and the community under guidance from concerned experts.
Minimum education requirement for admission to this course is successful completion of 10 plus 2 or equivalent examination. Minimum Marks 50% for admission there is no upper age limit prescribed preference will be given to candidates below the age of 35 years. Preference will be given to candidates having higher academic qualification, experience of working with person with mental, Retardation,Hearing, Impairment, Parents/siblings, persons residing in rural area, etc.

This is a course of two academic years (4 semester) plus 3 month internship during which period the selected candidates cannot to pursue any other course. Selected candidates should join the course by the stipulated date. At time of joining the course the selected candidate will have to produce (a) Bond to the effect that the admitted candidate will not discontinue the course if not continue the course they should be paid full charge of the academic year.
30 (Thirty) candidates will be admitted to the each course of the Training centre. The state and Union Territories covered under and the seats allotted are given below. Out of 30 seats training centre three seats are reserved for SC, two seats for ST candidates and one seat for persons with disability Act. PWD as per the persons with Disability (Equal opportunity) Protection of Rights and Full Participation), Act, 1995.
The duration of course the course will be 220 days consisting of 1320 hours each hour thus having a total 2640 hours for theory and practical in 4 semester of two years.

iii) Library Charge (per semester) ............... 15,000/-
iv) Development Donation – as will be decided by the competent authority of the organisation.
v) Registration fee, Examination fee for theory, practical papers External & Internal and enrolment/affiliation charge will be payable to NIEPMD, NBER and the guideline of RCI.
The curriculum for the special education will consist of predominantly practical exercise to develop necessary skills in education and training of persons with related course.
Group A : THEORY subjects – Total 12 Papers.
Group B : PRACTICAL subjects – as RCI guideline.
Hostel Accommodation is arranged in two grade A and B. Contact Superintendent of hostel for facilities. Hostel rules and regulation can be changed by decision of the Executive Committee.
Visits will arranged to various centres for about 10 days. The trainee teachers should give a report on educational tour (optional). The tour will be by own contribution.
A period of 3 months internship is prescribed to DSE (MR)/(HI) trainees. During the period the trainee will work full time in the organisation where he/she is undergoing internship subject to approval from Ministry / RCI.
There will be four semesters examination. At the end of each semester trainees will have to appear in and Examination to be conducted by NIEPMD – Chennai etc. Above 80% of attendance in compulsory to be eligible for appearing in the each examination.
A candidate must obtain 40% pass marks in each Theory Paper and 50% in each Practical Paper separately in internal & External assessment. Theory will have 40% internal and 60% external marks. Practical will have 60% internal and 40% external marks.
Candidate must pass in three papers in the 1st year to be allowed to go to the 2nd year. Failed candidate can appear in the supplementary Theory Papers for the two year course.
Division : There will be uniform pattern of division as under :
75% & above – Distinction
60% - 74% - 1st Division
50% - 59.9% - 2nd Division
40% - 49.9% - Pass Class
No class shall be awarded in the 1st year examination. Class will be awarded on the basis of aggregate marks obtained by a candidate in 1st year & 2nd year examination in Theory & Practical combine.
A Diploma Certificate will be awarded to the candidates after successful completion of the course. Provisional pass Certificates will be issued to successful candidates by the examination body upon declaration of the result.
